Safe and healthy homes

for our income challenged neighbors

About Us

Good Neighbor Home Assistance, Inc. (GNHA) is a new non profit that grew out of a need my wife and I were seeing while volunteering with Saint Vincent de Paul Society and other service organizations. Since retirement, we live and do volunteer work out of Mt. Pleasant, SC not far from some very poor rural areas north of us in Charleston and Berkeley counties where we focus our services. We visit many homes that are in a poor state of repair and given little/no discretionary income, the homeowners (100% at poverty level) cannot keep up with maintaining their homes in safe and liveable conditions. Many of these homes (single structures and mobile homes) are old and have been passed down to surviving family members.

SERVICES

We help people who are at the poverty line, who have no discretionary income, take care of the basic needs of home ownership, so they can continue to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Home Repair

Critical home repairs usually include correcting unsafe conditions, e.g., deteriorating floors and walls, water leak damage, and roof issues.

Additionally, we provide important improvements for the disabled, such as safe exterior steps and ramps, and walk-in shower conversions.

We collaborate closely with St. Vincent de Paul Society on many of these projects.

Appliances

We provide appliances, primarily refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers.

Also, importantly, we supply/repair air and heat units to keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter.

And, each appliance comes "equipped" with a bible inside.

Furniture

Our focus on furniture is to build and refurbish some of the basics. This includes, but not limited to, kitchen tables and dressers.

This is particularly important for new families making their transition to permanent housing.

Our appliances and furniture are delivered through the generosity of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

CHANGING LIVES: How your donations will help.

You can change the quality of life for the folks we service who are income challenged. All of them live in poverty and many are seniors or have a disability. Because of this, they spend the vast majority of their time in their house. You can help them experience a more enjoyable, safer and healthier life while at home.

Background

Good Neighbor Home Assistance, Inc. (GNHA) is a relatively new non-profit charitable organization. It was incorporated in South Carolina in July 2023. The organization has no paid staff and there is no office to keep administrative expenses minimal. Most work is completed through contractors, volunteers and by supporting and partnering with other agencies with similar objectives. Clients primarily come through the help line of  St. Vincent de Paul's Society local conference. Everyone we help is visited in their home to better understand their needs and financial situation.
